Programs & Activities

We appreciate everyone who supports Onahan PTO either financially or by donating their time to help run all these programs.

Back to School Movie Night
This is a free evening for Onahan families to come out and mingle while enjoying a free movie and popcorn. Candy and beverages will be available for purchase. And, there will also be a DJ and games for all to enjoy. If you have a craft or hobby you would like to showcase or have the opportunity to sell, please contact the PTO to rent a table and display/sell your work. We hope the Onahan families will stop by to support these vendors. The event will take place in the field behind Onahan.

Birthday Books
(Mary Byrne)
Each student, regardless of whether or not their parents are members of the PTO, will receive a book from the PTO for their birthday. This has been a tradition carried on throughout the years and provides a way for each student to feel special. This program is completely funded through the PTO membership and fundraising efforts of the PTO.

Book Fair
The annual Scholastic Book Fair will be held again in the gym. We have added a day to the fall book fair this year, so one day of the fair will be while students are in session and the second day will be during parent/teacher conferences. Please feel free to send money with your student to shop alone, or feel free to accompany them as they purchase books.

Fundraising
Market Day (Erin Watson and Julie Battaglia)
We hope that families will take the time to budget for a few items each month to be purchased through Market Day. If each family supported the Market Day program, Onahan would benefit greatly as a result. Market Day order forms will be sent home with your child each month. Order and pick up dates will be posted on the calendar, as well as on the back of your forms. Online orders and payments are also welcome at www.marketday.com

Scrip Program (Robynn Upton and Onahan Booster Club)
This is the easiest no cost to you fundraising we can do. Simply plan ahead and purchase SCRIP gift cards to any number of department, grocery, home improvement and retail stores. It's an even exchange of your cash for the gift card. Then you just go shopping like you normally would and instead of paying with your credit card, check, or cash, use the prepaid SCRIP gift cards! Onahan will receive a percentage of the face value of the card. Please see the Family Order Form for a list of stores and percentages each store will provide Onahan. Profits from this program will be used to fund the Physical Education Program and Onahan Athletics.

Restaurant Days (Valerie Green)
Periodically throughout the year, the PTO works with local vendors to provide the opportunity for Onahan families or supporters to dine in, carry out or have food delivered while have a portion of the proceeds coming back to Onahan. Please consult the Onahan School Calendar, school website, or look for flyers in your child’s folders and support Onahan while having someone else do the cooking for you on those nights!

Box Tops and Labels For Education (Ellen Metrick)
My Coke Rewards (Laura Boyd)
Tyson's Chicken Package Tops (Claudia Martinez)

Jr. Olympics
This event is for students through grade 4. There is an obstacle course of athletic events and tests for which the students compete both individually and as a team. This event takes place in the morning and requires many volunteers.

K-8 School Picnic and Lunch

Our goal is to host an all-school picnic outdoors. We hire a DJ and provide a hot dog lunch, we have playground equipment out and ready for the students to use, and we have face painters and tattoos as well. We anticipate a fun afternoon with no classes, but as the last two years have proven, we can’t always count on the weather. Last year’s rain plan was movies indoors for all students. For this event we need help bagging lunches, as well as for outdoor stations. If you can assist with this event, please contact the PTO.

Halloween Celebration

Each year the PTO sponsors Halloween activities for all of the students to enjoy. Last year there was a costume parade for students through 4th grade. Primary grades enjoyed games and parties in their classrooms, middle grades were entertained by a magician in the auditorium, 5th-6th grades had a mystery “who-dunnit” party and the older students had a dance in the gym. While there are no definitive plans for what the PTO will do this year, we always need volunteers to help pull off this afternoon of activities.

Helping Hands

This is a committee which will meet every other Thursday in the auditorium after morning drop off to assist teachers, staff and the PTO with copying and collating, craft projects, pencil sharpening, mailings, etc. Anyone is free to attend and all are asked to bring staplers, pens, scissors, glue/tape and any other supplies that might be necessary to complete the projects at hand.

Holiday Shop

The annual Holiday Shop will take place in the gym again this year. This is an opportunity for your children to go shopping for their loved ones by themselves. Most students appreciate the opportunity to select and purchase their own gifts. We need many volunteers to assist students with their shopping as well as to sell merchandise. If you are available to help, please contact the PTO.

Holiday Gift Giving

Onahan Open House
Please take this time to stop by our table and join PTO.

Parents' Night Out

Principal, Vice Principal, and Administrative Assistant's Day

Spring Dance
The Spring Dance is for students in grades 6-8. Its two hours on a Friday evening in the Onahan gym where the students get to dress up and are with their friends and a DJ. Chaperones are parents who do not have a student in grades 6-8 so the students do not need to feel awkward with their own parents around. It’s a very enjoyable evening for the students who attend.

Family Science Night

School Assemblies
Laser Show, Magicians, Science Night, Yo-Yo Show

Talent Show/Play Concessions

Teacher Appreciation Week
This is a fun filled week in May for which the PTO provides a breakfast or lunch for the teachers and staff on one day, and does a little something special for them on the others. We are always looking for new ideas or creative ways to pamper our staff, so please let the PTO know if you are interested in planning or helping out with this week.

Teacher Luncheons

A few times throughout the year, the PTO hosts breakfasts or luncheons for the Onahan teachers and staff. Any help with setting/cleaning up, shopping or connections to caterers/food suppliers is always appreciated.

Walk-a-Thon
For a few years, the walkathon has been the main fundraiser for the PTO. With the addition of the Auction/dinner last year, we now have a second opportunity for which we can raise money to support Onahan. This year the Walkathon will be held in the Spring. This is an easy way for you to support your children and the school, as the students complete laps on the track to raise money.

Yearbook (Donna Staunton)

We have provided the opportunity for students/families to purchase yearbooks through the PTO. This year we are hoping to extend the coverage through the end of the school year and include the graduations, Jr. Olympics, Washington trip, etc. in the yearbooks. We will begin taking orders as early as Book Fee Days in August. If you are interested in taking pictures or helping with page layouts, we are looking to start a Yearbook Committee. Please contact the PTO if you are interested or can lend any talents.

Uniform Exchange (Mary Byrne)

The Uniform Exchange gives families the opportunity to turn in gently used uniforms in exchange for vouchers to be used at the Uniform Exchange in August held at Book Fee Days in August. Parents may turn in the uniforms outside of school on the the last day of school while students are in class. Those receiving vouchers will be allowed to attend the Uniform Exchange 1/2 an hour earlier than everyone else in August. Those without vouchers will be allowed to purchase uniform pieces for $5 or less.

Pre-K, K, and 8th Grade Graduation Celebration and Awards

Each year the PTO provides a reception with food following each of these ceremonies. We appreciate any volunteers to assist us with these events.
