Onahan School's One Computer At A Time- Frequently Asked Questions
* I would like to donate, but I cannot afford $100 per student, can I still donate?
YES! $100 is only a suggestion; NO amount is too small or too big!
* Is there a deadline?
11/16/12 is the deadline for those wanting to earn the $100 out of uniform pass (1 per
$100 donation).
Please don’t feel like you must donate by then, if that does not work with your budget,
feel free to do it before January 31 if possible.
* Can I break out my donation into smaller amounts?
YES! We understand everyone’s budget is different, please do what works best for your
family.
* I cannot afford to donate, can I ask others?
YES! Please use the Keyboard flyer to help gather donations from family and
friends.
* When are we getting the computers?
Our goal is to have them ready for the completion of the annex and to start the 2nd
semester. (Beginning of February)
* Why do the computers cost so much?
1. We are required to use a preapproved vendor through CPS, cannot shop the Sunday
sale papers.
2. All CPS computers must have certain software installed.
3. We are purchasing Mac computers.
THANK YOU to those who have already donated!
As of 11/9/12, we have raised $7,200 but we have a long way to go!
Onahan needs your help! Each year, parents are asked to complete an application for
free and reduced lunch. The number of students receiving free and reduced lunch at
our school is at a percentage that does not warrant extra funding from CPS.
Unfortunately, the district’s funding formula and our lower percentage of students
receiving free and reduced lunch causes us, the families of Onahan, to finance the
“extras” that many schools take for granted. To ensure that we continue to fulfill our
mission to the Onahan school community, we have come up with a fundraising idea,
"Making a Difference in Our Kids' Lives, One Computer at a Time." Our students need
& deserve these computers. It is up to us to support our school. Please consider
donating to this important cause. No amount is too small! Together we can achieve
our goal. The students of Onahan School appreciate your consideration.
THANK YOU,
PTO Board

Isn’t $1,500 a lot of money for 1 computer?
Yes, but let us explain…
MYTH: Onahan School can shop around for the best
priced computer.
FACT: Chicago Public Schools have computer contract
obligations. All CPS
Schools must buy computers through
Oracle – a CPS purchase site.
The prices are fixed between Apple
and the CPS Board.
MYTH: The price for 1 computer of $1,500 is inflated.
FACT: Apple Desktop vs. Apple Laptop
Option
#1. – APPLE DESKTOP
Intermediate Macintosh Desktop: iMac 21.5 inch.
Slim, all-in-one design, 2.5GHz Intel Quad-Core i5; 4GB RAM; 500GB Drive. Wired
keyboard/mouse. Mac OS X + iLife 11 + iWork 09; CPS image; 3 yr AppleCare
Warranty.
Purchased from Oracle = $1,359.00
Purchased from Apple = $1,497.27
Difference in price = $68.97
OPTION
#2. – APPLE LAPTOP
Intermediate
Macintosh Laptop: MacBook Pro
Aluminum 13 inch. Light and durable. 2.4GHz Intel Dual-Core
i5; 4GB RAM; 500GB Drive; 7 hour Light weight Macintosh... battery; Mac OS X +
iLife 11 + iWork 09; CPS image; Intermediate Macintosh...3 yr AppleCare Warranty;
Laptop Security Software.
Purchased from Oracle = $1,490.00
Purchased from Apple = $1,507.97
Difference in price = $17.97
MYTH: Onahan School must buy Apple brand computers.
FACT: No. We do not have to buy
Apple brand computers, but
- Apple computers do not get viruses
like other computer brands.
- Apple installs major upgrades to its operating
system – keeping the computer’s software upgraded free of charge.
MYTH: The computers are base
models and will have to be reprogrammed.
FACT: No. All
Apple computers purchased by CPS schools have the following
included in the price:
o delivery
o installation and set-up
o asset tagging
o asset recovery
o three year extended Apple Care warranty
o CPS image installed
o iLife (iPhoto, iTunes and iMovie)
o iWork (Similar to Microsoft Office)
o Anti-Virus
MYTH: Chicago Public Schools offered
our school computers for the new
computer lab, but Onahan turned them down.
FACT: No. Onahan
received no such offer. Who would refuse
a gift worth over
$50,000?
MYTH: The newly constructed Onahan
Annex was paid for by Tax Increment
Financing (TIF), a public financing method that
is used for
improvement projects.
FACT: No. The Onahan Annex was authorized under Mayor
Daley’s guidance.
It is being paid through the Public
Building Commission of Chicago.
MYTH: Not all of the money will go towards the purchase of
computers.
FACT: 100% of the money donated for this fundraiser will go towards
purchasing computers for Onahan’s
new computer lab.
Please
consider making a donation to the Onahan computer lab.
An investment in knowledge pays the best interest.

Support Our Teachers
On the 1st day of school, please join us as we show support for our teachers by having a red ribbon in the girls' hair, and a red ribbon tied to the boys' backpacks. PTO will have red ribbons around the trees and extra ribbons for people that don't have them. If you see anyone with a handful of ribbons, feel free to ask for one! This is a great way to show our teachers that we support them as they fight for a fair contract.

Onahan PTA is becoming Onahan PTO!
As a PTA, Onahan was giving $4.25 to the National PTA but in turn we were not using any of the National PTA resources. As a PTO, we will be self contained and able to keep your full membership here at Onahan School. We will still be insured as a PTO and will conduct ourselves in the same way as in years past. In reality the vast majority of parent-teacher groups are actually independents rather than formally affiliated PTAs. After much research it has been decided that it is in our best interest and a smart financial choice for our school to make the change.
This coming school year your new membership will also include:
An Onahan PTO Facebook page for exclusive use by members as another form of communication and anawesome yard sign that will show your Onahan pride!!
We are looking forward to a stupendous 2012 -2013 school year filled with wonderful school and family memories!!!
